This compendium of 30 papers, presented at a national seminar, organized by Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, attempts to examine the different aspects of traditional knowledge and social practices which promote biodiversity conservation. It deals with the traditional knowledge used for oral hygiene of rural people, medicinal uses of plants by the tribal people, traditional knowledge of fishermen communities, and traditional management practices for aquaculture.
It also discusses at length the indigenous knowledge on nomenclature of freshwater wetlands, the issues of patenting of traditional knowledge, farmers’ folk knowledge, indigenous hill farming systems, ethno-medicinal plants, the concept of biodiversity conservation in Indian religions, traditional nature-based culture, conservation of plant species through age-old religious and social practices, and people’s role in maintaining microorganisms in a metropolitan canal.
