Profile in Literary Courage takes a fresh look into certain less known aspects of the works and achievements of five key figures of the English literature produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries : William Wordsworth, Oscar Wilde, D.H. Lawrence, T.S. Eliot and William Somerset Maugham. These authors ushered in fresh waves of new thinking and writing in their age. Most of them began as rebels but ultimately succumbed to traditional modes of thinking and writing. In the process, they faced a crisis which necessitated the modification of their behavior and expression. They were consequently misunderstood on various grounds and underwent ups and downs in their literary reputation. This calls for a re-assessment in the light of recent studies on their works. All the writers subjected to critical analysis in the present work were seekers after truth. Their writings awaken complete, living experiences, which would enlarge the readers’ vision and lead to the expansion of their self.
