Intellectual property (IP) represents property of your mind or intellect. It can be an invention, trade mark, original design or the practical application of a good idea. In business terms, this means your proprietary knowledge –a key component of success in business today. It is often the edge which sets successful companies apart and as world markets become increasingly competitive, protecting your intellectual property becomes essential. Even though the term "intellectual property rights" has recently become topical and, it remains a mystery- some obscure legal concept of little relevance to everyday life. Using carefully chosen cases and facts and figures, this work seeks to demystify IPR. It explores the concepts behind the different forms of IP, and how they operate in real life. Dr. Krishan Gopal, M.A., M.LIS., Ph.D., a practicing Librarian and Information Scientist, is currently working at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has made significant contributions to the Library Information Services in the area of research and development, documentation, etc. Dr. Gopal has a number of books to his credit which is the results of his research work of the last two decades and which have been accepted and acknowledged by the academic community. He has contributed by way of writing several articles and reviews of books in well-known journals as well as national newspapers. As a dedicated librarian, he is associated with professional organizations like the Indian Library Association and Ranganathan Research Centre. He has delivered a number of professional lectures nationwide.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sarbjit Sharma
Dr. Sarbjit Sharma is a graduate from the University of Delhi and holds a degree in law. After his Master’s Degree in Political Science, he has done his Ph.D. in International Relations. He has been a practicing lawyer in various courts, including the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India. Dr. Sharma has represented the Union Government and the Department of Customs and Central Excise in various cases relating to foreign exchange laws, contempt petitions and matters under the Consumer Protection Act. He has also dealt with matters relating to landlords/tenants, matrimonial disputes and property transfer.
