Many of the changes in current educational practices can be understood only in terms of our increased concern with the individual child, with his needs and his hopes, with the complex world in which he lives, and with the even more complex life he will lead as an adult. To be sure, good teacher have always been concerned with the individual, but today there is growing awareness that we need more than concern, and more than concern plus love. If the teacher is to be effective in helping children to mature into responsible adult, capable of exploiting their own potentialities to the fullest extent, he must know how children grow, how personality traits are developed, and what can be done when emotional difficulties interfere with wholesome development.
