‘Catvarimsatchata Raganirupanam’ is a treatise of medieval period. Raga=ragini classification is supposed to begin from 14 century onwards. There are many schools of Raga=ragini classification, viz. Hanuman, Siva, Bharata and Narada etc. The present work seems to be the last of that system as it classifies one hundred and forty ragas. Though the name suggests the description of theoretical part of the ragas yet we find only the contemplative and descriptive depiction of the raga-raginis. The manuscript of Raga Nirupanam was obtained twenty years ago from Tanjore library. There are 60 painting in this book which portray the actual description, the work provides. Raga Nirupanam was published in 1941 and not available at present. This book might give some idea of Raga-ragini classification of the medieval period. Ancient music of India has many such valuable manuscripts written in Sanskrit language which are being neglected. Hence this is a small attempt to attract the attention of not only Indians but the whole music world.
