ABOUT THE AUTHOR V.K. Raina

V.K. Raina, superannuated as Deputy Director Genral, Geological Survey of India, after an active field oriented service of over 36 years during which he carried out extensive research on the geology and the glaciers of the Himalayas. An ardent mountaineer, his field activities include research on the two volcanoes in the Bay of Bengal, and led two Indian Scientific Expeditions on Antarctica that earned him the National Mineral Award and the Antarctica Award. He is currently the Chairman Programme Advisory and Monitoring Committee on the Himalayan Glaciers, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; member Research Advisory Council, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and has authored over 100 scientific papers and two books: 'Glaciers' The Rivers of Ice and Images Antarctica.
