Ramachandran – Icons of the Raw Earth was inspired by Ramachandran’s magnificent bronze sculptures. These works are a continuation of the paintings that he started to work on in 1995, just a while after his last major exhibition and the publication of Ramachandran, Art of the Muralist by Rupika Chawla. There is a prologue by Ramachandran with a text by the author divided into two parts. The first half The Lotus Pond examines Ramachandran’s imagery which is based on traditional Indian art and which flows into his contemporary paintings with a smooth continuum. The Bronzing of Colours explains the transition of the imagery from paintings to sculpture and how, through this change, a new set of dynamics is set in motion – the metamorphosis of a work of art into a personal icon. The book is well designed with 56 colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations.
