History tells us that ours is not a nation born just yesterday. It has been in existence since ages, in fact, long before other nations of the world appeared on the map. Nor was it primitive or uncivilized. Our country was universally revered for its achievements in every sphere of human activity science, arts, commerce, philosophy sociology and spirituality. Her countrymen had also carried the torch to distant lands and established their cultural empire over vast areas of globe. But unfortunately we could not keep it up at home and were eventually enslaved. Our nation’s basic malady did not lie in foreign enslavement; it lay in its own lack of unity. Even foreign domination was a direct result of that basic national disintegrity. The unifying feeling of nationalism among the Hindus had progressively weakened, thereby eroding the devotional attitude of the individual towards the nation. The onerous task of reversal of this decline required a great vision and sincere efforts. After 75 years of non-stop working by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), we find a nation that is getting revitalized and trying to stand on its own. The change is brought about by the ‘Shakhs’ technique that was evolved by Dr. Hedgewar. The uniqueness of the technique lay in its emphasis on the active participation in national affairs by each and everyone in the society. Shakha technique involved the effectively practical method of offering at least one hour a day for the sake of society. The physical , intellectual and mental training in the Shakha was designed to motivate and prepare all sections and strate of society for constructively involving themselves in this manner in the nation-building work. The name of the Sangh, its flag, its prayer, its pledge, its exposition of thought, the several aspects of its methodology conveys but one message – the instilling in the Hindu psyche of unadulterated devotion to the Motherland and the urge to sacrifice for its greatness and glory. Shri Guruji rightly insisted that RSS members should prove as effective instruments in spreading the sublime Hindu life-values in their respective fields of activity and contribute to the overall goal of Hindu Renaissance in 1973 Shri Guruji passed away. Blasaheb Deoras took over, concentrated on the cultural and social content of the Sangh and emphasized on Samajik Samrasata. Due to the ill health of Balasaheb Deoras, the responsibility of the Sarasanghachalak-ship fell upon the shoulders of Prof. Rajendra Singh. He believes that the ‘Shakha’ system of RSS provides the natural way to lead a successful life towards the creation of the whole world as one and happy entity. That too by giving the individual and the society opportunity to save oneself from the passion’s attacks and blend into one social whole with full understanding of duties and rights towards each other. On account of the falling health of Rajju Bhaiya the leadership responsibility has been handed over to Shri K.S. Sudarshan, who is the crusader of Sangh Movement in the 21st Century. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has emerged as the world’s largest voluntary and missionary organization. Those, who are honestly concerned about their people, see it as a national and divine asset and a dynamic movement for national upsurge and rejuvenation. RSS is the strong expounder of the thought stream that in the 21st century Hindus have to play an important role for which they should be prepared. Peace and harmony can be established in the world when the noble idea of unity in diversity is put into practice.
