The book includes 38 research articles on various aspects of Plant Sciences written by leading experts. The first eight articles are on microbial aspects and include microbial phytases, VAM fungi, screening of actinomycetes, solid, state fermentation and rhizosphere bacteria. An article on conservation of Cycads in written by Goel from NBRI. There are five articles on fodder grasses from scientists of Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi. Medicinal plants and ethnobotanical aspects are covered in about 10 articles. Other topics include morphogenesis of seven species of tobacco, effect of herbicide on yield in Cicer arietinum, Proteases in Indian bean, Effect of pesticides on amylase activity, anatomical properties of Casuarina equisetifolia and impact of environmental factors on gliding motility of Oscillatoria. There is an article on Biological disasters.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR B. Ravi Prasad Rao
Dr. B. Ravi Prasad Rao did post graduation in 1986 and was awarded Ph.D. in 1991. Dr. Rao joined Department of Botany, Sri Krishnadevaraya University in 1992. Presently he is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Botany. He is the coauthor for 2 books and published 30 papers. He executed three major research projects funded by WWF, UGC and DST. Four students were awarded Ph.D. under his guidance.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR C. Sudhakar
Prof. C. Sudhakar obtained his M.Sc. (1981) and Ph.D. (1991) from Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He joined the Department of Botany in 1987 as Assistant Professor and is currently Professor in the Department of Biotechnology. He was a UGC visiting fellow (ICRISAT, 1992), DBT, National Associate (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 1993-94, Stress protein characterization) and Commonwealth Academic Staff Post Doctoral Fellow (University of Sussex, UK, 1998-99, ATLS of rice salt tolerance), INSA-Royal Society Fellow (University of Sussex, UK 2001-02, Rice root proteomics) and DBT Overseas Associateship awardee (University of California, Riverside, 2005, Barley and cowpea genomics). He has been awarded DST-DAAD PPP 2002-05 to work on Barley proteomics, under which he and three of his students visited Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plants Research, Gatersleben, Germany twice in a year. He is Principal Investigator of four major research projects funded by APNLBT, DST, CSIR and UGC totaling nearly a crore of rupees. Under his guidance five students obtained their Ph.D. degree. He has published more than 40 papers in National and International journals.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.R. Venkata Raju
Prof. R.R. Venkata Raju did his M.Sc. from Sri Krishnadevaraya University in 1981. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1986. He described about 10 new taxa belonging to Euphorbiaceae and Asteraceae. He guided 14 scholars for Ph.D. degree and 15 members for M.Phil. degree. He published 2 books and 80 research articles in national and international journals. He has served the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (IAAT) in the capacity of Secretary during 2000-2003. He has completed six major research projects funded by CSIR, DST, UGC, ICFRE and WWF and at present holding two major projects financed by UGC and DBT.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S. Thimma Naik
Dr. S. Thimma Naik obtained his M.Sc. (1986) and Ph.D. (2002) degrees in Botany from Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He worked for more than 15 years in Central Silk Board as Senior Research Officer. He published 5 research papers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR T Pullaiah
Prof. T Pullah obtained his M.Sc. (1971) and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia, during 1976-1978. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanic Gardens in about 16 countries. He joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. He held several positions in the University as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Head, Department of Botany; Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany; Head, Department of Sericulture; Co-ordinator and Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology; Principal, S K University College and Warden, S K, University Hostels. He has published 43 books, 238 research papers and 35 popular articles in Journals of repute. He is the Principal – Investigator of 20 major Research Projects totaling more than a Crore of Rupees funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, BSI, WWF, GCC, BARC etc. Under his guidance, 45 students obtained their Ph.D. degrees and 34 students their M.Phil. degrees. He is the recipient of Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. P Maheshwari Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxanomy. He served as the Vice President of the Indian Botanical Society and presently the Councilor of the same. He served as a member of Species Survival commission of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
