Most of the chapters in this book were originally published as Pasajes de la guerra revolucinaria in 1963, by the Cuban publishing house, Editorial Union. Many chapters had already appeared in serial form in the magazine of the Cuban armed forces, Verde Olivo. After it was published, Che Guevara made additions, deletions, and corrections to that book (see the photographs of these pages reproduced here), but these corrections were never included in subsequent printings. When Aleida March, Che's companera and presently the director of the Che Guevara Studies Center, Havana, discovered the marked-up book many years later, Che's additions were finally incorporated and appear here for the first time.

Included as appendices are two personal tributes to revolutionaries: a Guatemalan Julio Roberto Caceres Valle (“EI Patojo”) and two women who fought in the struggle against Batista, Lidia and Clodomira. The third piece included as an appendix, "A Sin of the Revolution," was written in 1961.

Authorized and meticulously revised by the Che Guevara Studies Center of Havana, Cuba, with extraordinary photographs of the period, this edition of Che's reminiscences is the most authoritative ever to be published.

In fact, Che's original diaries from the Sierra Maestra and Santa Clara, on which he based this book, have never been published. In collaboration with the Che Guevara Studies Center, Ocean Press and its sister publishing project will publish these original diaries in 2009.
