A well-known artist of America, Roderick Dempster Mackenzie came to India in 1893 and he lived in India for long twelve years remaining involved in diversified art activities. His painting of the Delhi Durbar on the occasion of the commemoration of King Edward VII as the Emperor of India in 1904 happens to be a remarkable art work widely known round the globe. His restoration of the models of Chitor elephants in black marble in the Delhi gate is again an amazing example of sculpture pieces unparalleled in the art activity of the present generation. But his innumerable sketches and paintings of the wild life in India, of ferocious tigers in the jungles of India are not only most remarkable, but could be deemed as unique pieces. These days the Project Tiger of the Government of India, the Wild Life Foundation in Washington, USA and many Departments of Environments, Institutes, foundations, museums, zoos, art galleries round the world have been very much involved in many ways on tigers of wild forests, tiger chasing and organized efforts for increasing the tiger population in India, but nearly ninty years ago from today how an American artist made paintings and sketches of tigers living in forests of India is not only very fascinating, but awfully thrilling too. This book gives a life sketch of Roderick Dempster Mackenzie and an account of his marvelous art activities in India.
