While considerable literature has appeared on the political history and institutions of the Delhi Sultanate, a study of royalty as such has largely remained a desideratum. The present work fills this gap in our historical studies. It surveys the historical landscape of medieval India from the foot of the royal throne. Besides a glimpse into the public and private life of the sultans, it throws lot of light on their ethnic background, their legal and actual position, their patronage of art and culture, their religious leanings, contact with outside world and relations with the Hindus. In short it covers the entire spectrum of the life of the Delhi sultans from the haram to the battlefield. The study is based on an extensive search and discovery of new source material.
