Many attempts were made for the upliftment of the rural poor. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vivek Saurath

Vivek Saurath served as Adviser (Information & Planning) for the Food & Agriculture Organisation for over sixteen years. He obtains a Master's degree in Economics from University of Bombay and a doctorate in Agro-Economics (Food Technology and Processing) from the BHU, Varanasi. During 1982-87, he was at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland as visiting Professor in Developing Economics & Food Security.
