In recent years, rural development is getting increased attention in countries around the world. It is one of the most important item in the development agenda of all countries. It contributes greatly to the development of disadvantage (rural) regions through its various structural funds. The sustainability of rural development initiatives depends greatly on the capacities of the stakeholders involved, the relationships among them and their relative power. A strategy to foster pluralistic approaches to rural development should focus on building the capacities of those who have been marginalized by development strategies as well as on developing relationships that allow more effective, efficient and equal interactions and greater accountability among all participants. Rural Development: Towards Sustainability is a compilation of three volumes: Rural Empowerment, Rural Sustainable Development and Rural Diversity and Community Development. Each volume describes the issues and concerns related to its title. It is hoped that this work will address the needs of a wide range of audiences like students, teachers, researchers, policy makers, governmental and non-governmental organizations and all who are directly or indirectly related with rural development.
