Karnataka is one of the harbingers of socioeconomic and political changes in the country, particularly since 1991. Rural Karnataka is also showing welcome changes in agricultural, industrial and services sectors although the pace and pattern of these changes are not uniform. Karnataka, however, has some worrisome problems with regards to sectoral shifts. After a decade of reforms it is appropriate that an appraisal of these changes be made so that reprioritisation of the development initiatives can be done. This book, therefore, puts together empirical and analytical contributions from distinguished social scientists. Their papers dwell on the evolutionary as well as contemporary issues and perspectives of globalising rural Karnataka. The book contains 22 papers giving refreshing insight into the social, economic and political dimensions of dynamic rural Karnataka. The authors have attempted to focus-in a dispassionate way-the on-going changes and have (wherever necessary), spelt out alternatives to the current approaches to development of rural India in general and rural Karnataka in particular. The message is simple and straight: As a developing state, Karnataka should be genuinely proud of her achievements and at the same time be alert to the upcoming threats and challenges to development as also her potential to address them. The book is intended to provide referral benefit to students, scholars and policy-makers.
