Recent interest in the study of agrarian power structure and the change within it stems out of the far reaching influence on the patterns of economic development, emergence of new groups in power structure and social change in India. A decisive break from the colonial and semi feudal past is being witnessed in these areas as leading to the changes in economic motivation, a heightened political consciousness, and an increased social awareness. Peasants and peasant societies have, thus, become a prolific area of inquiry for the social scientists in general and sociologists in particular. The present study is an attempt to analyze the changing power structure in western U.P. It not only compares the contemporary power structure with that of traditional power structure, but also identifies the strands of continuity and change in it. The book is useful for all those interested in understanding rural dynamics.
