This book is about the river Saraswati that vanished more than 2000 years ago. Written in simple language shorn of technical jargon, it explores the existence of a mighty, snow-fed river, traces its course from the foothills of the Himalayas to the shores of the Arabian Sea. It also outlines the history of human settlements along this river from the beginning of the stone age through the glorious period of the Harappan Civilization, to the commencement of the historical times. The author examines this scenario within the framework of geological parameters and evaluates inferences rigorously on the anvil of geodynamics. The book finally highlights the geological events that overtook the land leading to the disappearance of the river that was once the lifeline of the people that inhabited its floodplain. ABOUT THE AUTHOR K S Valdiya
K.S. Valdiya, INSA Golden Jubilee Research Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research at Bangalore, has been a keen and active student of geodynamics of the Himalaya, environmental geology and neotectonics. With more than 45 years of experience as university teacher and researcher, he has authored nearly a hundred research papers, four scores of popular articles (mostly in Hindi) and several books. A recipient of many national awards, including the Bhatnagar Prize (1977) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the L. Rama Rao Gold Medal (1980) of the Geological Society of India, the Pitambar Pant National Environment Fellowship (1982-84) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the D.N. Wadia Medal (1995) of the Indian National Science Academy, the National Mineral Award of Excellence (1997) of the Ministry of Mines, K.S. Valdiya is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the Third World Academy of Sciences and Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of America and The Nepal Geological Society.
