M.N. Roy was an outstanding intellectual-activist of the first half of the twentieth century.Â He had few peers in the diversity and richness of his revolutionary experience.Â He took an active and leading part in revolutionary movements in India, Mexico, the Soviet Union, and China.Â Roy was a political contemporary and colleague of stalwarts like Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Bukharin, Zinoviev, and Borodin.Â The vicissitudes of Roy’s life were indeed extraordinary.Â At the same time, he was a penetrating and prolific writer, whose works run to over a hundred times.Â His writings are indicative of his extraordinary analytical ability and the transcontinental sweep of his vision.Â Volume III of the Selected Works presents a selection of his principal writings between 1927 and 1932.Â Very large sections of this volume were previously inaccessible since they had not been written in English nor published or included in any book.Â Roy’s contributions to Das Valksrecht, Gegen den Strom, Arbeiter Politik and INKOPP, and his polemical pamphlet ‘Die International Verbundeten’ were found in archives in Europe, and they have been translated for the first time from German to English for this volume.Â Other rare material includes the ‘Assembly Letter’, Roy’s ‘Draft Resolution on the Indian Question’ prepared for the Sixth Congress, the document ‘On the Indian Question in the Sixth Congress’, ‘My Crime’, ‘The Lessons of the Lahore Congress’, ‘My Defence’ and selections from The Masses, Inprecor, Revolutionary Age, and Independent India (1931).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sibnarayan Ray

Professor Sibnarayan Ray was a close associate of M. N. Roy during the last eight years of the latter's life. He was Chairman of the Department of Indian Studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia, for nearly twenty years. Also Professor at the Universities of Bombay and California (Santa Barbara): Director of Rabindra Bhavana, Visva Bharati University; Research Fellow at the Universities of London and Chicago; and visiting lecturer at Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg, and various other Universities in Europe, the United States, Australia and Asia. He gave the main address at the Third World Congress of Humanists at the University of Oslo, Norway, and was a member of the Executive and Board of Directors of International Humanist and Ethical Union, Holland; Chaired the First International Congress on Modernisatior. In Asia at the Korea University, Seoul; was Director of the international Seminar on EI Papel de la Inteligencia eu las Sociedades Asiatican Contempraneas at the University of Mexico. Author of about forty books in English and Bengali; be has been editing a Bengali quarterly of ideas and unquiry (Jijnasa) for the last eighteen years. He has been recently honoured with an Emeritus Fellowship in Literature. Besides writing a number of books in English and Bengali, he is engaged in editing the Selected Works of M. N. Roy, four volumes of which have already been published.
