The name, the land of seven sisters, had been originally coined, coinciding with the inauguration of the new states in January, 1972 by Jyoti Prasad Saikia, a journalist in Tripura in course of a radio talk. These seven provinces of India are inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, some of which have preserved ancient customs, Shaman rituals and headhunting traditions. They are surrounded by China, Myanmar and Bangladesh. This book aims at compilation of up-to-date and innovative material on this fascinating and ethnological transaction zone of Northeast India.
