Shelter Security for the Elderly is an edited volume of papers from Israel, Romania and India. Scholars from the respective countries have analyzed the emergence of old age homes and the attempts at introducing standards of care for the residents. It is obvious that India is far behind the two countries in terms of standards of care despite some very meaningful attempts by the Private Real Estate industry specializing in individual and group housing products for the elderly.
The papers also indicate the need to go beyond old age homes since it would not be possible for any country to continue investing endless resources in setting up such institutions. The ultimate solution appears to be seen in the development and nurturing of caring neighbourhood and communities. The re-emergence of family home as a caring place for the elderly continues to remain a matter of nostalgia and romance rooted in old times.
