ABOUT THE AUTHOR Swarajbrata Sengupta
Dr. Swarajbrata Sengupta, a Radical Humanist, taught Bengali language and literature in S.S. College, Jiaganj (Murshidabad), Durgapur and Chandannagar Govt. Colleges, Presidency College, Calcutta; obtained Ph.D. degree of the University of Calcutta for his thesis entitled ‘Evolution of Language, The Role of the Working People: A Field Survey in Rural West Bengal and D.Litt. for his thesis entitled ‘An Introduction to the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms’; contributes to the ‘Universitas’ (a multilingual Journal, Berlin Univerisyt, ‘Language’, Colorado University, ‘The Yale Review’, Yale University, ‘The Calcutta Review’, Calcutta University, ‘The Radical Humanist’, (Calcutta, Delhi and Mumbai), ‘Jijnasa’, ‘Chaturanga’, ‘Parichaya’, ‘Kabitirtha’, ‘Mandas’; edited the ‘Anubad Patrika’, a quarterly journal of translations for more than ten years, has been co-editing ‘Purogami’ a socio-political monthly devoted to secularism, rationalism and humanism for thirty two years; a permanent fellow of ‘The Underdeveloped Language Communities’, S.E. Asia, attended its first and second conferences at Manila and Nalanda (1976 and 1978) and the 6th conference at Rangoon (2000); participated in the International Seminar on World Linguists at the Mexico City University (1996), and his paper on Jurgen Habermas was highly acclaimed by the participant-linguists. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Encyclopaedia (to be published in eight volumes) of Under-developed Language Communities of S.E. Asia.
