Sleep and wakefulness are complex behavioural phenomena and are objectively identified by recording electrophysiological signals from the body. It is present in higher forms of life although comparable phenomena exist in lower species as well. These states are interrelated and one remains in either of the states. When one expresses one of the states, the other state remains subdued. The book describes the neurobiological mechanisms of generation and regulation of sleep and wakefulness. It also deals with the role of sleep in maintenance of normal life.
