This book differs in scope and methods, from the usual demographic studies on fertility. The controlled comparison of two establishments of the Indian Telephone Industries located in the contrasting cultural milieus of Bangalore and Rae Bareli identifies priority needs of individuals and pattern of motivation determining their reproductive choice. An innovative battery of psychological tests are found to be correlated to social indicators, fertility performance and reproductive behaviour of employees in the organised sector, coming from two different socio-cultural milieus. The study probes in to the reasons why some people adopt contraceptive measures while others do not. It also shows why the family welfare programme has a stronger base in south India than in north. It suggests ways and means for improving IEC (Information, Education and Communication) aspects of family planning programmes. There are serendipitous findings on the differing values and ‘locus of control’ of individuals from the two distinct cultures of north and south India and their influence on reproductive behaviour.
