Meant as a textbook for the students of Sociology at the undergraduate level, the volume is an introduction to sociology and its relation with other disciplines. It presents the distinctive sociological views of thinkers like Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Vilfredo Pareto, C. H. Cooley and others. It deals with the structure of Indian society and its dynamic aspects, taking up the composition of the Indian society, concept of caste in it and its features. It views some approaches to the study of Indian society, focusing on urban, rural and tribal societies in India. The Panchayati Raj system, the jajmani system and the features of urban and rural societies as well as the geographical distribution of tribes and the constitutional safeguards provided to Scheduled Tribes are some aspects taken up in detail.
