The study views the changing concepts and dimensions of social welfare and social work from the Vedic times to the present. Adopting the approach and method of social history, it examines the historical development of social policy and development of social welfare by taking up different historical periods: ancient India, medieval India and the colonial era. It deals with the professional status of social work and the practice of social work in a cultural perspective. It critiques contemporary social work approaches, calling for a new approach in a developmental perspective.
