This is a study of the life and art of the Chitrakaras of Odisha whose life revolves around Patta painting. It provides the historical and socio-cultural aspect of Chitrakara caste, duties of the Chitrakaras and their position in the Jagannath temple as well as the relation between patta painting art form and Lord Jagannath. The detailed study covers the stages, techniques and artefacts involved in making of patta painting, the nature and style of the paintings, and their colour schemes, themes and regional variations. It also takes up emerging changes in the age-old craft of patta painting and the response of the Chitrakars keeping in view the developments taking place in the caste community owing to modernisation. It focuses on market orientation of the craft on the artists’ lifestyle and work and takes it up as a factor decisive for the future of the craft and the community.
