The present work is a comprehensive study of the British administration in Orissa during the Nineteenth century. During this period the British administration in Orissa was mainly confined to economic problems. What was the impact of the British administration on the social life of the people; how the British system of education helped the people of Orissa to reorient their ideas and outlook; how the coming of the Railways ushered a new atmosphere in the social and economic life of the province-all these have been discussed and dwelt upon at length, with full reference to original sources. The author has not only given a vivid picture of the social life in its various aspects, he has also explained how social changes can result from economic policies. He has attempted to draw a clear picture of the economic conditions of the province and how they were responsible for the social problems faced in the Nineteenth Century. This study presents a better and fuller understanding of the socio-economic history of British administration in Orissa.
