Solid waste management is one of the important and crucial issue of urban management. It is an issue of day to day life and involves each and every citizen in the whole process which covers all functional elements from generation to final disposal. In developing countries, it has remained neglected for the past several decades. Quantity of municipal solid waste is ever increasing due to increase in population, urbanisation, developmental activities, changes in life style, food habits and socio-economic activities but collection efficiency and infrastructure is not increasing proportionality. A rapid growth of urbanisation has serious implications on this service resulting in unhealthy and unhygienic environment. Urban ecosystem and the growing awareness of the people will put more and more pressure on municipal authorities to find out sustainable solution on the acute problem. Despite the numerous efforts and measures taken by the government it is still a critical and major concern for the community with respect to the deteriorating conditions of the environment.
