The study covers four South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, tamil Nadu and Kerala and describes the various crafts by their routes and building techniques. It also deals with historical aspects of the subject, representation of the maritime activity in art, maritime archaeology, and maritime trade and contacts of the Indian subcontinent. On the whole the book makes a valuable contribution to the scanty literature on the vanishing maritime traditions of South India.
