Child labour is a significant problem in India. The prevalence of it is shown by the child work participation rates which are higher in Indian than in other developing countries. The country is the largest example of a nation plagued by the problem of child labour. Estimates cite figures of between 60 and 115 million working children in India – the highest number in the world. Within the Indian context, the issue of child labour is widely seen as a manifestation of poverty, and the child’s contribution to the household economy is seen as vital to meeting the basic needs of poor families. This book addresses the nature, extent and conditions of child labour in India. It brings together a range of perspectives concerning the causes of and solutions to the problem. The approaches to combat the evil, constitutional and legislative steps taken, action programmes initiated and the role of international bodies in ensuring rights of the child and elimination of child labour, etc., are elaborately described. ABOUT THE AUTHOR P.K. Goyal
Pawan Kumar Goyal, (b. 2nd August, 1938) did is BA (Hons) from Punjab University, Chandigarh. He did his Post Graduate Diploma in Library Science from Punjab University, Chandigarh. He also acquired Export Management Certificate from Indian Institute of foreign Trade, New Delhi. He was commissioned into Indian Army from OTS Madras on 14 February, 1965. In 1971 Indo-Pak war, he was Field Cashier and handled a very large amount of cash during war. He also handled ammunition during Indo-Pak war. He gained Operational field experience in Eastern and Western Command and worked in insurgency prone areas of Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir. He was promoted to full Colonel Rank. He retired from army on 30 August, 1990. After retirement he joined Vidya Devi Jindal School, Hisar, as Administrator, and served there for more than thirteen years. He has expertise in field of Man and Material Management, General Administration, Accounts, Logistics, Analysis of Intelligence and Management of Security. Besides being an avid bibliophile, he has many interests and contributes papers and articles on various issues regularly.
