This book represents the translation of the author’s structural steel design and construction support experience in the United States of America in terms of the Indian Standards and Codes of Practice and his perception of the needs of the Indian engineering students. The book is based on his experience with the students while teaching at Aligarh Muslim University as well as his interaction with practicing engineers during his many visits to India.
A former Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Aligarh Muslim University in India and later a practicing Structural Engineer in the U.S.A. for well over three decades, the author has presented a pleasant and practical blend of the theory and practice of structural design in steel. The book incorporates just enough theory for its readers to feel well-informed and comfortable with the details and complexities of steel design they face in their practical career before presenting a large number of practical design problems. This emphasis on practical design forms an integral part of the book. The basic concepts and fundamental building blocks of steel design presented in the chapters on Structural Fasteners, Tension Members, Beams etc. are used later to familiarize the readers with the more interesting and challenging topics of Special Connections, Multistorey Building Frames, Industrial Buildings, Plastic Analysis and Design and Water Tanks. Extensive illustrative examples with a strong practical bias are presented to emphasize and accentuate engineering problems and their possible solutions.
Written in an easy, systematic and concise style, the book incorporates a wealth of material including a large number of example problems along with a set of expanded Steel Tables of Indian Rolled Sections to help its readers develop and hone their skills and knowledge of steel design and detailing. Students as well as practicing engineers will find the book of considerable interest and practical use.
