This is an attempt to write a simple and comprehensive book on red algae without compromising the important facts. The text covers the basics as well as currently available information on the structure, ultrastructure and reproduction and is well illustrated with suitable diagrams and photographs to make the reading lucid and understanding better. The pace of research work in phycology during the last two decades has been rapid and consequently there is no dearth of information available on various taxa of red algae. This information is buried in various scientific journals and many of them are out of reach of the scholars and pupils interested in this fascinating group of algae. The aim in writing this book is to compile the available literature for the benefit of students at graduate, post graduate and research levels. This beautifully illustrated and lucidly written compendium introduces the readers to various aspects of red algae, covering classification, morphology, reproduction and life histories supplemented with ultrastructural and histochemical details. It is apparent that both histochemical and ultrastructural information is becoming increasingly important in understanding and in teaching the biology of red algae. Many photomicrographs and line drawings are included to make concepts, structure and interaction more clear. The large number of references enhance this self contained epitome. Continuous active research in this field, in collaboration with nine participants has helped to present a balanced approach in this book.
