Surdas

Surdas, saint and poet of the sixteenth century, was blind from an early age, but was gifted with the celestial vision of spiritual insight. His poetry is a unique symphony of songs and psalms or Bhajans. His Sursagar has been considered the best exposition of Krishna-cult as propounded by Vallabhacharya, his spiritual guru. Vallabhacharya initiated Surdas into his sect during one of his journeys to Braj. Thought his life continues to be a source of controversy among scholars, his greatness is undoubted and none can deny that even a common reader is moved by his verse. One gets immersed in his beautiful poetry. The very fact that his works continue to be popular after centuries bears testimony to their exceptional caliber.
