Tax reforms and administration is an indepth study of Union Government’s efforts at tax restructuring and reforms, covering all important direct and indirect taxes–personal income tax, corporation income tax, excise duties and custom duties–in detail. Tax administration which has assumed much more importance in the present context has also been adequately dealt with. Estimation of overall tax–GDP ratio, growth rates, tax buoyancy, determinants of tax-ratio and construction of tax performance index make the analysis of tax structure more rigorous and empirical. Using all available data upto 2003-2004 and national and international level reports on tax reforms and administration, the book derives a package of reforms which are still needed for introducing efficiency, equity and economy in the system, and for mobilising adequate resources for economic development. The book is of immense use to students, teachers, researchers in the area of public finance, planners and policy makers and those interested in government finances.
