The work attempts to understand the Dravidian mode of temple architecture based upon classical texts in general. The definitions and description of various adjuncts of the temple are useful for the research scholars of south Indian temple architecture in general. But the study of temples of Salem region in particular throws light upon the lesser known temple with great aesthetic value. This also helps in understanding the development of temple architecture in buffer zones where culmination of various styles is noticed. This many a times results in the emergence of a distinct indigenous style. This factor results in reflecting the contemporary socio-economic and religious expressions cared on stone.
