The Agony and the Glory is an abridged version of samarasve' Jeevana, a modern Kannada classic in fiction. Written by Vinayak Krishna Gokak, a celebrated Writer and Jnanpith Award Winner, the novel has gone into many editions. Published in 1953, it is an authentic picture of life in the first quarter of the twentieth century in India and is a saga of 3-4 generations. The theme of this novel is Harmony is Life, which is an essential tenet in the author' s metaphysical view of Life. This theme is worked out through the story of three main couple: Narahari and Kusuma, Vishnu and Pramila and Sinu and Sushila. Narahari and Kusuma are an exemplary couple revealing harmony. The existing disharmony and ways and means of introducing harmony are shown on the five main levels of life-the individual, the family, the inter-regional, international and global. The Agony and the Glory of life at all these levels has been brought out in the novel. Samarasve' Jeevana has a magnificent fictional design which encompasses a large mumber of characters and covers a wide range of places and introduces numerous stimulating ideas. The Agony and the Glory, an abridged version presents a broad outline of the novel and brings out the essential vision of life in the original.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vinayak Krishna Gokak
Born in 1909, Vinayak Krishna Gokak has come to stay as a patriarch in Indian literature. His contribution is rich and varied, but his strain is spiritual seeking. Gokak has won many awards, among them being the Sahitya Akademi Award and the most prestigious Bharatiya Jnanpeeth Award for Kannada Poetry and has also been recipient of Padma Sri from the Govt. of India. He was the President of sahitya Akademi Delhi for a number of years. He enjoys the reputation of being a trend-setter in Kannada poetry as well as in Literary Criticism. Honoured with D. Litt (honour's causa) by Karnataka University, Dharwar and University of the Pacific California, USA, Prof. Gokak was for some time Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University and Director of Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Simla.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Yashoda Bhat
Yashoda Bhat served as a Reader in English, Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. She has published two collection of poems and published a book on Aldous Huxley and George Orwell and has translated into English the late Prof. V.K. Gokak's Kannada novel Samarasave Jeevana. In addition, she has adited two books viz., The Image of Indian Woman in Indian Literature (1993), Beyond the Threshold: Indian Women on the Move (1995). After her retirement, she has settled down at Dharwad, Karnataka and continues with her literary pursuits.
