Kalidasa has not written anything about himself. From his works, however, we gather that he had traveled extensively and was intimately knowledgeable about the culture and characteristics of the places described by him. Scholars have reasoned variously in support of Dhara, Ujjain, Bengal or Vidarbha as Kalidasa’s likely place of birth. Pandit Lachmi Dhar Kalla reasons in details to hold that Mayagram (modern Manigrama) in the Sindh valley of northern Kashmir should be the poet’s birth-place. The author, having given his reasons for accepting Kashmir as the birth-place of Kalidasa, follows up with likely objections to his thesis and answers them. Finally, he reiterates a number of points in support of his thesis and invites his readers to offer alternative explanations.
