The narrative in this compact novel is sharply satirical, extremely funny and moves swiftly. Believing that his father has asked him to locate Sara, absent from home for two days, Max Saul sets off on his errand. Max doesn’t usually bestir himself for others, or indeed himself; but Sarai is special and Max needs to find her..Soon, however, Max is diverted from his mission by sundry acquaintances and possible friends. The need to find Sarai is periodically forgotten, and Max instead gets involved in a series of escapades in quick succession: these include a shoplifting; organizing an escape from a police station; being an unwilling focal point at a revolutionary gathering and in consequence being show at by the police. H commits a murder without being caught and befriends a stray dog unloved by all but himself. Sri eludes Max, but he returns home eventually – to Urmi his wife. As he novel ends, e lean that Max’s father ha died several years earlier and that Sari never existed.
