The present book is authors’s thesis entitled, The Concept of Brahma its origin and development which was examined by Dr. H.D. San kalia, Dr. A.L. Basham and Dr. K.K. Dutta Shastri and on which the author Dr. S.P. Basu had been awarded Ph.D Degree in Arts by the University of Calcutta on August 1984. While tracing the hierophantic origin of the God Brahma in the Vedas, the author makes "a very comprehensive and thorough survey of the subject". The inter-disciplinary study of the concept of Brahma from the points of view of Sociological and Anthropological, Archaeological and Historical, Philosophical and Astro physical disciplines may be taken as a brilliantly original approach to the problem of the concept of Brahma which has always beeo determined in relation to the concepts of Vis^u, Narayaa, Sorya and Siva. Since the study is associated with the cosmic creator god of the Hindus, discussion of tfce subject from the point of view of ndern Astrophysics has crept in. Deferent cosmological concepts of the ancient Hindus have been compared with various theories of modern Astrophysics on the origin of the Universe viz. Big-Bang theory, theory of Pulsating Universe. Original Sanskrit texts relating to these problems are extensively quoted from the Vedas, the Upanishads, Puranas and other Sanskrit literatures to make the present study a complete ‘Source Book This is the special feature of the book. The book is divided into Chapter I dealing with the origin of the concept of Brahma, Chapter If on Upanishadic Post-vedic, Buddhist and Jaina and Epic concepts of Brahma, Chapter III on Puranic concept of Brahma, Chapter IV on the worship of Brahma, Chapter V on Iconography of Brahma and an Appendix on the notes on the plates.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.P. Basu

Dr. S.P. Basu was awarded Ph.D. Degree in Arts by the University of Calcutta on August, 1984, on his thesis, ‘The Concept of Brahma its origin and development’. His other work in ‘The Second Supplementary Catalogue of the vol. 1’ published by Indian Museum, Calcutta in 1977. He was formerly Asstt. Numismatist, Archaeological Section, Indian Museum, Calcutta under Archaeological Survey of India. His contribution to Manipur numismatics by bringing to light the gold coin of Gambhira Singh of Manipur has been recognized as a pioneer effort. For sometime, he was posted at Khajuraho as Curator of the site museum. He was also the Curator-in-charge of the site museums at Bodhgaya, Vella-Goa. At present he is the Curator (Archaeology), Indian Museum, Calcutta. He is specialized in Display Technique in Museum and Museum Education, a specialized training of which he received in West Germany under exchange o Scientists Programme in 1973. The mobile exhibition on Indian History and Archaeology was prepared by him for the first time in India through the Museobus under the auspices of the Indian Museum and was put on wheel under his supervision. He has a very good Sanskrit background. In 1953 Gangamani Silver Medal was awarded to him by the University of Calcutta for his meritorious performance in B.A. Sanskrit (Hons.) Examination. He is an M.A. in Sanskrit with specialisation in History and Epigraphy. He is also Kavyathirtha, a degree on Sanskrit literature from the Government of West Bengal. Besides, he has written a large number of papers of subjects relating to the different fields of Indology and Museology. He has guided many a research worker in spheres of their respective study which was verily concerned with museology and humanities.
