The ‘Kharam’ is a small tribe inhabiting in four different areas of Senapati District of Manipur. For quite long time this group was not recognized as scheduled tribe under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Now, very recently they were included in the tribal list of the Government of India. However, Kharam tribe had a long history of relationship with many principalities of Manipur including Moirang. This is clearly evidenced by the records and information recorder in the ancient text and literature. But the importance of this group was not able to reflect in the minds of the people of this place. Even their history, cultural and political practices were not able to come out in a visible point. At the same even the academicians did not make any type of attempt for an intensive research work on the history and culture of this small tribe. It was only in the beginning of 1990’s, the Manipur University, as a part of their research programme, had proposed this book under the direct supervision of Prof. Ganmuei Kameio the then Professor in History department and Coordinator for Tribal Studies Centre, MU. This book is, indeed, a comprehensive work and it touched every aspects of the life and history of Kharam tribe.
