The present volume, the seventh in the ongoing series Cross-currents of Indian History and Culture, is study of the Gandhian Era in Indian Politics. It covers the period 1920 to 1947 when India achieved independence. The Volume is divided into two parts: (1) Renaissance and Transformation; and (2) A passage to freedom. The first part deals with administration and major trends of Indian economy, educational policies, development of literature in various Indian languages, growth of religion, social reform movements and major achievements in the field of art. Part Two is devoted to the saga of freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. It discusses the passage of the Rowlatt Bills and the reign of terror in the Punjab culminating in the Jalianwala Bagh massacre. The situation traces the development of Pan-Islamism as a force in Indian politics and also the passing of the Government of India Act, 1919 on the basis of the Montagu-Chelmsford report. The authors have taken pain to describe the various movements launched by Mahatma Gandhi which led to the final negotiations with the British Government and the achievement of independence in 1947.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A N Kapoor
A.N. Kapoor After obtaining M.A., D.Phil, in English from Allahabad University, Dr. Kapoor taught English at Agra and Delhi Universities for over four decades and has edited, compiled and authored more than hundred titles including reference books, encyclopaedias and language dictionaries. His dictionary of geographical terms published in 1955 was the first work of its kind in Hindi. His comprehensive English-Hindi dictionary stands as the crowning work of the four decade long effort. The lexicon is considered a work of tremendous relevance for the entire gamut of bilingual activity, being undertaken in the country as almost all levels of our social system, educational institutions and government department.
