This book is written as much for the South African as for the visitor to South Africa, yet no South African is likely to object very much if it begins on the sea. For even though he himself may never have made that journey from Europe at Africa, his ancestors did – no matter whether they came from Holland, England, Germany, France, or half a dozen smaller countries – and it is almost certain that he hopes some day to do it in reverse He longs to visit Europe as young provincial Englishmen (and Scotsmen) longed to go to London before the cheap excursions and the motor-coaches came: and it is surprising how many get there in the end.
