Information sector is the only formal system available to the poor to ply their trades and make a living. The so called formal system also poaches on the informal and gets its goods and services out of it at less than reasonable terms which are not always fair. Its survival strength is on its resilience, promptitude and personal attention to each client’s needs. This facility / trait is impossible for the formal sector to provide weighed down as it is with fixed methods and moulds of production, high cost and rigid organisation. There is yet to be borne a policy-which is aware, sensitive and sympathetic to this sector which provides over 80 per cent work/ income opportunities to the work force in most developing countries – in India most certainly. Keeping in view the importance of the informal sector in economic progress of the developing nations, the present anthology is an effort to bring out various issues which inhibit the sector fromfully responding to the changing demand pattern and socio-economic and political environment in these countries. The efforts would be well rewarded if further researches / studies are undertaken and debates are organised on the issues brought out to ensure a smooth and vibrant growth of the sector in the present day of liberalisation.
