This is one of the many books written about the First Afghan War, the writer of the book described it as a "Great Catastrophe", from the British point of view. The aim of the author of this narrative was "to record a tale of unparalleled loss to the British army which till then was only been identified with triumph and renown throughout the eastern world" and as such it was never his desire to acclaim the generalship and political accumen of a "savage" which succeeded in breaking that image of Paux Brittania with a handful of his ill-provided, comrades who never had any formal training to fight against one the mightiest army of a powerful nation, the army which had the honour of having defeated the great Napoleon.
