The peace process in Nepal has become nobody's concern. The culture of impunity has prevailed unabated, the Maoist combatants continue languishing in their cantonments, and the Maoists have not yet returned the seized property, houses and land to the real owners. The list is goes on. This book mainly covers the period from November 22, 2005, to January 14, 2009, and discusses the peace initiatives taken during the period.

The book has been divided into six chapters. The first introduction chapter provides the background of the decade old armed conflict and depicts the picture of the insurgency and militarization in the country. The second chapter describes the various initiatives taken to restore peace. The third chapter includes the transition from the 12-point Understanding to the declaration of the Ceasefire Agreement. The fourth chapter is concerned with the monitoring of the peace process. The last chapter includes the conclusions reached in the book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Birendra Prasad Mishra

Birendra Prasad Mishra, Ph.D, was the coordinator for the National Peace Monitoring Committee for Ceasefire Code of Conduct from July 2006 to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord by the Maoists and the Prime Minister in November 2006.A retired professor of philosophy, Mishra is an election expert. He oversaw two parliamentary elections and one local bodies election as an Election Commissioner from 1994 to 2000. He was aslo an international observer for parliamentary elections in India, Pakistan, the UK, and the Australian Referendum of 1999. He is a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines on electoral and contemporary issues. He has authored four books, the latest being " Rebuiliding Nepal".
