The Nicobarese, who are of Mongoloid stock, are a large population of over 22,000. They live on twelve islands in the Nicobars and one island, Little Andaman, of the Andaman group. They are horticulturists and pig herders inhabiting large, permanent villages, mostly close to the sea shore. This study, undertaken by Anstice Justin, himself a Nicobarese born on the island of car Nicobar, combines personal experience with extensive fieldwork to provide a comprehensive account of Nicobarese society and culture. For the first time an attempt has been made to cover most of the major islands in the Nicobar group; and it should prove useful to scholars, researchers, administrators and planners interested in the study and development of tribal communities.
