The Rise and fail of the Mughal Empire is the Fourth Volume in the series Cross-currents of Indian History and Culture. The Volume id divided into two parts. The First part comprises three sections: (1) The Early Phase; (2) The Empire at its Zenith; and (3) decline and Fall of the Mughal Power. The first section deals with the various sources for the study of the history of the Mughal Empire, condition of India at the opening of the sixteenth century. Conquest of India by Babar, the reign of Humayun and the life ad work of Sher Shah Suri and his successors. The era of reconstruction started with the accession of Akbar in A.D. 1556 and continued upto the reign of Shah Jahan (A.D. 1658). This was the golden period of Muslim India. The accession of Aurangzeb after a brutal war of succession witnessed a turn in the tide of the Mughal Empire. It showed unmistakable signs of decay towards the beginning of the eighteenth century. The reign of Aurangzeb was the swansong of the Mughal Rule in India. The empire of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali exposed the hollowness of the Mughal Empire. The European Companies acting as warlords profited from the confused times and hastened the downfall of the mighty Mughal Empire. The Second Part deals with the social and cultural cross-currents of the Mughal Empire during the period A.D. 1526-1707. It is the period of more than two hundred years which witnessed the regins of some of the most powerful potentates of the world. Some of the Mughal emperors like akbar, Jehangir ad Shah Jahan have left permanent imprints on the sands of Indian history and culture. The second Part has been divided into three sections: (1) Political and Legal Setup; (2) Society ad Religion; and (3) Art and Literature. After dealing it the Mughal State in theory and practice, attempts have bee made to analyze the social, preceded by an account of the social and cultural achievements of the Mughals. The Third Part, entitled Bibliography: Sources, deal with literacy references, archaeo-logical evidence and accounts of foreign travellers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A N Kapoor

A.N. Kapoor After obtaining M.A., D.Phil, in English from Allahabad University, Dr. Kapoor taught English at Agra and Delhi Universities for over four decades and has edited, compiled and authored more than hundred titles including reference books, encyclopaedias and language dictionaries. His dictionary of geographical terms published in 1955 was the first work of its kind in Hindi. His comprehensive English-Hindi dictionary stands as the crowning work of the four decade long effort. The lexicon is considered a work of tremendous relevance for the entire gamut of bilingual activity, being undertaken in the country as almost all levels of our social system, educational institutions and government department.
