The Semantic Universe of Raja Rao is an illuminating study of Raja Rao’s twelve stories. It throws light on Raja Rao’s stories, the techniques and style therein. It analyses in depth his characterization. Some characters are highlighted with reference to the archetypes of Guru and the Eternal Feminine. Professor I.D. Sharma uses psychology, mythology and a bit of semiology to interpret Raja Rao’s blending of fact and fantasy, myth and metaphysics, tantric motifs and vedantic vision which result in an innovative and original book written in a readerly style. His argument is that Raja Rao as a story writer should not be seen as a novice. His story writing is not preparatory to his great novels. Raja Rao’s stories stem from his immersion in his material and from his immersion in his material and sieving it through an objective and mythopoeic imagination. The Semantic Universe is indeed a path-breaking work.
