The Author discuses the ways in which each age rediscovers Kalidasa to suit its own ends. As the author follows the history of commentaries, adaptations, editions and interpretations, from Dandi to Anandavardhana, from Vallabhadeva to Kalyamalla and the treatment of the plays in dance and music, he poses a fundamental problem – if every period can invoke Kalidasa in support of diverse values, then what does constitute his “greatness”?
