Tourism as a subject of study is an emerging discipline and there still exists some confusion as regarding its concept and definition. In the Indian context, it is in its very juvenile phase and as such not much of the study material is available on the subject. The onset of liberalization and the phenomenon of globalization have made India a destination of many stakeholders worldwide. This has resulted in change of fortunes for the country and today Indian has emerged as one of the greatest markets for global trade. This has opened opportunities for tourism as well. As a result tourism has become a subject for both planners and policy makers. While recognizing the true potential of tourism in the economic development of the country, the government of India has every reason to adopt it as an important facet for nation building process. As such the government has meticulously used all its resources in the speedy development of tourism in the country.
